Fooled Expectations

For those who aren't that firm in ancient greek legends, here is some background information: Once the city of Thebae was threatened by the Sphynx, who sat before the gates and asked every passing stranger the riddle: "What walks on four legs in the morning, on two legs at noon and on three legs in the evening?" The answer to the riddle was of course "Man", who at the beginning of his life as a baby crawls on his hands and knees, later on walks on two legs and with old age needs a stick as a "third leg". Nobody knew the answer to the riddle and all were killed and devoured by the monster. Nobdy until there came Oedipus, some poor chap who was fated to accidently kill his father and marry his mother. He gave the right answer to the riddle, whereupon the Sphynx got real mad and committed suicide ...
